3/8/23. Photographer Roland Fischer's work focuses on people and architecture. His primary goal is not the reflection of reality, but the exploration of the differences between image and reality. In the series "Nuns and Monks" his attention to the habits worn by religious orders reduces the images to areas of black and white, thus allowing his subjects to be portrayed in a more penetrating manner. Fischer’s most recent work features Chinese "collective portraits". Each consists of 450 individual portraits of students, steel workers, farmers or soldiers, collected in large format tableaux. They pose questions concerning individuality and society, context and subjectivity, freedom and self-determination.
